Sleeping-in means being able to lie in bed until it is easier to hold my eyes open than closed. This happens very rarely. Most of the time the sound of my alarm clock or a stray thought pops me into the conscious reality. Awake, alive, and ready to go!

Well, not always. You spend about 90% of your muscle energy opposing gravity. Without any resistance, you would fall at 22 mph per second². Getting out of bed is your first gravity defying feat of the day.

Sometimes a poor night’s sleep results in a poor start. The first few hours are funky and frustrating. One isn’t sure what to do first or how much attention should be given to Task #1; or was it Priority A; or was it work first, play later; or was it pray first, work later? Mark Twain once said “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” (Ack! Nauseating)

Having a defined sense of purpose and a goal for each day helps one to enact an action plan. Good rest combined with good intentions results in a good plan. A well-conceived day is spiced with fun, fellowship, and family. Having a routine helps automate repetitive functions so they can be performed without much thought or reinvention. 1,2,3; Ready, Set, Go!

Doing anything is better than doing nothing, even if it is perhaps not the best thing. As a friend of mine likes to say: “Fall forward. If you stumble, at least you are falling in the right direction.” The key to being awake is learning from each experience, good or bad. Living the Dream means being fully awake, fully aware of the possibilities, and fully aware of the hazards. When are you fully wake? Finish this sentence: I feel most alive when I _________.

Does each day contain something you want to do, like to do, need to do, as well as something you don’t want to do (a.k.a. eating a frog)? How tuned into your energy levels are you? Is 10 am the best time to answer emails or is it the best time to make client phone calls? I had a boss who used to say: “Don’t do a dime task at a dollar time.”

What will keep you awake and attentive in the morning? Obviously there is only one correct answer: coffee!

Today’s To-Do List:

  • Wake up
  • Coffee
  • …the rest

Living the Dream means being awake.
